for Whole-Staff INSET

We will design courses, tailor-made for your school. Courses can involve all or part of your
staff and can take place in your school or at a venue of your choice.

Our courses give an excellent opportunity for team building and bonding.

An example of the course we designed for Histon & Impington Infant School staff:

They requested an inspirational INSET day based on “Light” for all their staff.

After coffee we walked through to a darkened room where King Henry VIII was lying on his deathbed. Candles illuminated the four corners of the bed. The huge bulk of the man remained motionless. He had only minutes to live.

No, we were not proposing this as a KS1 activity! It was designed for teachers, at their own level, to show how effective lighting can be used to create an atmosphere in a classroom. In a hushed voice we were asked to consider what the King was thinking. Was he wondering why he was so completely alone? Was he regretting his treatment of Queen Catherine? Did he think that he was going to survive? And so on.

The experience was moving and informative. Following this, the course members split into three groups to look at light and lighting in different ways.

Practical activities included:

Science: Energy Sources • What happens to our eyes • How cameras work • Experiments with prisms

History: Fire • Torches • Candles • Lamps

Maths in a Practical Context: Estimating length, weight and capacity • Making adjustments based on the estimates • Measuring and weighing

Art: How have artists looked at light in the past • Graphic images from shadows • What happens when you move a light source close to an object?

Cross-curricular opportunities were highlighted at each stage. The plenary session highlighted some of the inspiration which the staff felt they had been given during the day.
